Fine-tuning electric car acoustics to enhance safety and comfort

Electric vehicles pose a very different noise generation problem to that of combustion engine-based vehicles. Even when electric vehicles are travelling at moderate- to high-speeds they are quiet, with wind resistance and tyres being the principal generators of external sound. As a result, US and EU regulators require newly manufactured electric vehicles to make an audible noise when traveling at low speeds so that pedestrians are better able to hear them approaching.

Hyundai responded to the latest safety requirements by developing an active pedestrian alerting system (APAS). And it has been able to do so without building multiple complex, costly and time-consuming physical prototypes.

Find out how Hyundai uses Actran simulation software to swiftly optimise design in our case study.
