Leica Laser Trackers & SpatialAnalyzer in Aerospace Manufacturing

    • The Determinate Assembly (DA) technique is used in aerospace assemblies. It requires drilling precise and matching hole patterns for fastening mating parts. The DA technique is critical to building large aerospace structures effectively as it allows for consistent and accurate assembly, and component alignment. Massive NC machines or large jigs are often used to achieve the required precision to drill DA hole patterns. These methods are both expensive and inflexible to changes in design and process. An alternate technique uses a robot on a rail using a large scale precision metrology system. This technique enables precise drilling of DA hole patterns in a cell capable of adjusting to changes in design and process.

The Oasis of the Seas--VSTARS & SA

    • The Oasis of the Seas is the world’s largest passenger ship with a gross tonnage of 225,282. It has room for more than 5,400 passengers. Not surprisingly, it creates a huge bow wave when under way, and encounters waves higher than 60 feet when crossing the Atlantic Ocean. When wave action started damaging the forward lifeboats, it was decided wave-deflecting sponsons to protect the lifeboats were needed. Sponsons are projections from the sides of watercraft that provide protection or stability. Metrologists from 3Space Measurement Specialists were responsible for measuring and defining the complex shape of the hull so the sponson could be designed and fabricated.

Installing Off-Shore Oil Platforms with SpatialAnalyzer

    • There are roughly 850 operational offshore oil rigs or platforms around the world. These structures support the drilling, oil or natural gas extraction, and processing and storing the product. Many oil platforms also contain extensive housing and transportation facilities for staff.
