MITNETZ STROM is a regional electrical distribution network operator that manages a power grid serving 2.3 million people across the German federal states of Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. In 2002, MITNETZ STROM began a gradual corporate consolidation from four small energy utilities to one provider.
As part of this process, MITNETZ STROM needed to capture, aggregate, integrate and standardize technical and spatial data for operating equipment, conductors and facilities. It sought a platform that would be central to its operation, support long-term planning and enable smart grid capabilities.
MITNETZ STROM selected Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial division to implement a GIS designed to meet the unique needs of utility providers. Powered by Hexagon’s advanced GIS technology and electricity data model, MITNETZ STROM’s technical and spatial data were integrated into an open, standards-based relational data warehouse.
Network data is now shared across the enterprise and accessed on the web. The utility provider leverages this information for smart grid planning and development. With Hexagon’s solution, MITNETZ STROM has an operational-ready model and a flexible system to proactively manage electrical network and energy needs now and in the future. Hexagon’s HxGN NetWorks is MITNETZ STROM's geospatial network information system and the data warehouse for all asset data. It is truly the heartbeat of the company's technology systems.
MITNETZ STROM’s network is getting smarter for the challenges of tomorrow and beyond.
