Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro Uses Hexagon Solutions to Ensure Public Safety During Olympic Games

The Challenge

In August and September 2016, the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, hosted the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and the XV Paralympic Games. Gathering more than 10,500 athletes and 1.4 million tourists from all around the world, these Olympic Games were the biggest event ever hosted by a Brazilian city.

Because resources were limited, the city needed to better target its investments to ensure public safety and security for athletes, dignitaries, and tourists during the games. To address these challenges, the Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro, known by the acronym CBMERJ, required a suite of solutions for large-scale event management, situational awareness, and reporting to support its activities during the Olympic Games.

The Solution

Since 2014, CBMERJ has used Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure’s Intergraph Computer-Aided Dispatch (I/CAD) system for its daily operations. Throughout 2015 and 2016, CBMERJ implemented other Hexagon technologies to management and support public safety and security activities during the Olympic Games.

CBMERJ leveraged Hexagon’s I/CAD system to enable call-taking and dispatch for control and monitoring of incidents. I/CAD’s scalability and dynamic resource allocation was key to helping CBMERJ handle an influx of incident calls and events during the games. For overall major event planning and management, Hexagon’s Intergraph Planning & Response solution allowed CBMERJ to manage organizational charts, timelines, schedules, and other resources across multiple agencies. Additional 3D mapping and GIS tools from Hexagon helped CBMERJ monitor events in real time via maps and dashboards while performing richer analysis for improved resource management.
