The new 2-in-1 solution from Hexagon for direct scanning of fine details at distance
by Matthias Saure, Product Manager Metrology / Laser Tracker, Portable Metrology Division, Hexagon
Abstract
In 2025 Hexagon launched the Leica Absolute Tracker ATS800, a highly innovative 2-in-1 laser tracker for reflector measurements and direct scanning of features and edges across a very large measurement volume of up to 40 m radius. This white paper provides a detailed insight into the technology behind the TruePoint Interferometer, the foundation of this unique new measurement system. The paper describes how C-FMCW technology has been integrated into the well-known Absolute Tracker platform to deliver high-accuracy direct scanning capabilities and how laser tracker users can benefit from the new capabilities of the ATS800.
Introduction
The launch of this latest Absolute Tracker marks a major step in the ongoing evolution of the Absolute Tracker portfolio. Building upon a legacy of innovation, each new model has introduced transformative capabilities to the laser tracker market. In 2019, the Leica Absolute Tracker ATS600 first introduced direct scanning functionality to the portfolio [1], while the 2022 launch of the Leica Absolute Tracker AT500, successor to the widely regarded AT40x Absolute Tracker product line, continued the tradition of precision and reliability.
With the introduction of the ATS800 in 2025, the development team was able to leverage synergies and shared components across the product line, allowing full focus on pioneering a new distance meter technology. This strategic approach has enabled the delivery of enhanced performance and expanded application potential.
Addressing a frequent demand, especially from within the large-volume aerospace industry, the ATS800 provides a unique 2-in-1 solution for highly accurate targetless measurement of features and edges, combined with the well-known Absolute Tracker reflector measurement capabilities.
