Automotive engineering: Enabling complex hinges for sports cars with integrated lightweight design

Accelerate product development of complex hood hinges with Generative Design

Are you looking for ways to optimize the design of (sports) cars, reducing the weight and number of parts while ensuring functioning kinematics? This case study showcases how EDAG Engineering, voestalpine Additive Manufacturing Center and Hexagon worked together to achieve just that.

By using MSC Apex Generative Design, the team was able to redesign a conventionally designed hinge of an engine hood for additive manufacturing, significantly reducing its weight and part count. The generative design process also produced organic lightweight structures that improved the overall quality of the assembly.

Read on to learn more about the challenges the team faced, the approach they took, and the results they achieved through simulation software in this joint innovation project.
