KAZ Minerals is setting new benchmarks in operational excellence at its Bozshakol copper mine, one of Kazakhstan’s largest operations. With a 45-year mine life, long-term sustainability is key. Hexagon’s OP Pro is helping optimise haulage and reduce delays, while the Operator Alertness System (OAS) is improving safety by detecting fatigue and distraction in real time. Optimising haulage and minimising truck wait times

Since implementing Hexagon OP Pro, KAZ Minerals Bozshakol has dramatically reduced truck idle times, from up to five minutes down to one minute. With real-time data on cycle times and shovel interactions, the site identifies bottlenecks and acts fast. Hexagon’s collaborative support model includes regular feedback loops with product specialists to track solution performance and suggest improvements. OP Pro has enabled site leaders to make informed decisions that support both productivity and safer operations.  

A smarter approach to fatigue risk with OAS  

To further its safety goals, KAZ Minerals deployed Hexagon OAS at Bozshakol. OAS is a proactive solution that detects operator fatigue and distraction in real time. The system provides audible and vibratory alerts to help avert incidents and, more importantly, captures vital data that informs fatigue management strategies.
 
“We were wondering if this system could help us understand the level of fatigue of our people better. What we found out — it was really worrying, because we started seeing that we had a lot of people that were driving with a high fatigue level,” said Malik Inkizhekov, Mining Director, KAZ Minerals Bozshakol.

“We implemented some measures to manage their fatigue, and this system was helping. From that time, I can say we improved our safety in the pit overall. I think this technology has a big impact, not only for Bozshakol, but for any mine,” Inkizhekov continued.
