Safety as a priority at Lomas Bayas

The Lomas Bayas open-pit mine, operated by Glencore in Chile, places the safety of its employees as its highest priority.

To strengthen this culture of care, the company implemented Hexagon Collision Avoidance System (CAS), a technology that acts as a preventive defence layer against potential collisions between light and heavy vehicles.

Using CAS, Lomas Bayas reduced risks and increased operator confidence, establishing itself as a local and international benchmark in the adoption of safety technologies.

From reliance on radio to confidence in real-time alerts

Before implementation, operators relied primarily on radio communication to identify nearby vehicles. This limitation reduced situational awareness and increased the likelihood of incidents in areas with high equipment traffic. Today, using CAS, radio communication is complemented by real-time alerts and 360-degree visibility, ensuring drivers are fully aware of their surroundings. This evolution represents not only a technological advancement, but a significant shift in how safety is experienced within the operation.

CAS enhances visibility and strengthens the culture of care

CAS has introduced a new layer of protection, offering real-time visual and audible alerts that support faster and more accurate decision-making. The solution provides drivers with a comprehensive view of their vehicle’s surroundings—covering the sides, front and rear—using high-precision sensors that anticipate risks and prevent impacts, helping to protect people, vehicles, and equipment while reducing operational costs and downtime.

More than just a technological tool, CAS serves as a powerful reinforcement of the safety culture, aligned with Glencore’s core value: safeguarding the lives of its people. What matters is that every employee finishes their shift and returns home safely.

Since implementation, operators report greater peace of mind when driving haul trucks, confident that they have preventive alerts to support their decision-making. In addition to reducing operational risks, CAS strengthens internal procedures, training programmes and segregation practices, becoming a powerful layer of defence within an integrated safety strategy.

The partnership between Hexagon and Glencore at Lomas Bayas further demonstrates how technology can transform safety in the mining sector, building a safer and more sustainable future for all.
