Meet Steve Lorimer

Helping Hexagon employees help each other

Who secures the information security officer? It’s not a trick question. For Steve Lorimer, who plays an integral role on Hexagon’s global corporate IT team, it’s important that everyone secures each other.

“Security is everyone’s responsibility, not just the IT team’s,” Lorimer said. “Everyone has to work in a secure way and do the right thing. My job's great because I get to work with different people all across the world, across all the divisions, and help them help themselves.”

The diverse range of people the security team works with is not limited to location or business type. Lorimer said he works with HR, other IT colleagues, product development, marketing, sales — everyone across Hexagon.

Sometimes the task is as simple as helping teams understand why it’s necessary to work in a particular way, and sometimes there is a bigger challenge in working with teams to solve complex data protection and security challenges.

People who work for Hexagon really do like to work for Hexagon, and they really want to go out and make things better.

“The biggest consistency you see is everyone has a real can-do attitude,” he said. “People who work for Hexagon really do like to work for Hexagon, and they really want to go out and make things better.”

Cybersecurity may sound a little daunting, but it’s not all about “you can’t do this” or “you can’t visit that website.” The goal is to make people's lives easier and simpler — while being more secure. The bottom line is that Hexagon keeps growing and growing, getting bigger and bigger. With that, cyber-criminals are getting more and more advanced. This means that those security challenges get harder and harder, and “we’re only as strong as the weakest link,” Lorimer said.

“There is always more to be done, but it’s exciting to be a part of that change process.”
